Bear & Black Dog offers professional freelance editing services for writers and self-publishing authors of MG, YA, NA, and Adult speculative fiction. Finish your manuscript? Congratulations! Stuck in the revision cave so long you don’t know which way is up? We know that feel. So…now what? Talk to one of our editors, by phone or IM chat, and create a revision plan to guide your edits. Editor will discuss your publishing goals, vision for the manuscript, and marketing considerations (comp titles/shelf placement). Requires detailed synopsis (5-10 pages, double spaced) and first chapter OR first ten pages. Pairs will with Reader Report! No edits made as part of this package.

It’s time to dot those i’s and cross those t’s. Our proofreader will read your manuscript with a hawk’s eye for typos, punctuation, and internal consistency of spelling and other mechanical considerations to make sure it’s error-free for your readers. The proofread does not include formatting, advice on developmental elements, or advice on language usage.

Our Line Edit, Developmental Edit and Twice Tried edits go way beyond spell checking. These editing services are thorough, tough, and honest. Your goals and concerns are the basis of our edit, as we work to give you the tools and insight you need to take your manuscript to the next level. We offer free 3 page sample edits with these edits.

A manuscript edit that focuses on style concerns such as sentence structure, grammar, and effective use of style tools. This is an edit geared toward prose and polish.

A substantive, top-down, full manuscript edit that considers the plot, characters, and other major parts of the manuscript to ensure they are well developed and work together to create a cohesive and engaging story. We’ll identify what is working, and offer suggestions for how to approach what isn’t.

Twice Tried gives you the benefit of two perspectives and two levels of editing. Both Cait and Ash will work on your manuscript; one editor starts with the large-scale developmental edit, and once you have made changes in light of that edit, the other editor will perform a line edit. This  is essentially a publishing house edit. Twice Tried is a great value for self-publishing authors who want to present a book of superior quality and polish.
